7artscafe, Yokohama’s multidisciplinary cultural hub combining a superfood-focused café with a community art gallery, is proud to present Gary Dadd as our International Artist Spotlight for September 2026.
This featured exhibition showcases a compelling body of work by Dadd, reflecting 7artscafe’s ongoing commitment to international artistic dialogue and meaningful cultural exchange within the local community. Visitors are warmly invited to experience the exhibition while enjoying 7artscafe’s signature superfood menu in an intimate, welcoming setting.
Gary Dadd is a full-time contemporary artist based in Cambridge, England, internationally recognized for his distinctive handwritten portrait drawings. Using words as his primary medium, Dadd constructs highly detailed portraits composed entirely of handwritten text—often drawn from his subjects’ own words, interviews, speeches, or public statements. His work explores identity, voice, and communication, transforming language into powerful visual form.
After beginning to exhibit his work over a decade ago, Dadd transitioned from a career teaching non-verbal children to communicate through images, dedicating himself fully to his artistic practice. This background continues to shape his work, imbuing it with a profound sensitivity to alternative forms of expression and the expressive power of language beyond speech.
Dadd’s work has been exhibited internationally at venues including Somerset House (London), Grand Arcade (Cambridge), and Gallery 88 (Los Angeles). During September 2026, he will undertake a month-long mini-residency at 7artscafe, where audiences are invited to engage with his work at the intersection of language, portraiture, and contemporary drawing.
